SHOUT-UP! CAMPAIGNS TO MAKE OUR PUBS, CLUBS, BARS AND VENUES SEXUAL
HARASSMENT FREE ZONES.
Shout-Up! asks everyone to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to sexual harassment, making our bars, pubs and clubs safer places for women and men. Shout-Up! was conceived by Newcastle City Council's Safe Newcastle, Crystlsd and Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland and launched in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 2017.
Shout-Up! delivers training to venue staff enabling them to identify, understand and react to sexual harassment coupled with media, promotion and in venue-marketing which boldly proclaims venues a sexual harassment free zone. We are all responsible for making our communities safer.
WHY TAKE PART?
Because if we not only make our venues, but also #ShoutUp about it, i.e. if we declare a zero tolerance to sexual harassment and tell people about the work we do to make our venues safer, more people attend, people stay longer, spend more and keep coming back.

The training is delivered by experts from Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland. It's formal name is Bystander Intervention, it will support bar staff and door staff to recognise situations that could endanger patrons and understand the impact of sexual violence on those who experience it and fellow patrons. The training will teach staff how to deal with these situations within the scope of their role, i.e. they will not be required to put themselves in danger.
RAISING THE BAR
Shout-Up is led by and devised by the same organisation who deliver Raising the Bar, Safe Newcastle.
Raising the Bar is a best practice scheme and accreditation certifying the venue for their upkeep of public order, noise reduction, safety and public health.
Shout Up! is specifically about best practice when it comes to eliminating sexual harassment in venues in the city and how to make your venue a safe space for all patrons.
All venues who participate in Shout-Up! will have this considered as part of their Raising the Bar application, and will be looked upon favourably because of it.
MARKETING & PR
Marketing and PR support is a key part of the campaign, the activity spans social media, advertising, local press - including opportunities for radio, TV and editorial as well as in venue marketing including posters, beer mats and t-shirts.
We will shortly be expanding resources available for download online.
DID YOU KNOW?
79% of women experienced inappropriate comments, unwanted touching or groping ON A NIGHT OUT.
Shout-Up! trains and equips venues to communicate verbally and non-verbally (through behaviour and in-venue activity) a zero tolerance approach to sexual harassment.
63% of women and 26% of men had directly experienced sexual harassment ON A NIGHT OUT.
Whilst men are not immune to unwanted sexual behaviours (Drinkaware, 2016), research indicates that when women are the perpetrators, men are less likely to describe these behaviours as ‘unpleasant’ (Christmas & Seymour, 2014).
We train and equip venue staff to support and listen to anyone who has experienced sexual harassment in their space and to effectively communicate with those people who are harassing others, whilst acknowledging that women are more likely to exprience sexual harassment than men.
Shout-Up! aims to make venues a safer place for women and men, but importantly, also aims to ensure that venues are not inadvertently providing a conducive environment for sexual harassment.
72% of those surveyed said they have WITNESSED sexual harassment ON A NIGHT OUT.
Shout-Up! says that we are all responsible for making our bars, clubs, venues and communities safer.
It should not be the sole responsibility of the person experiencing harassment to seek support, rather the venue should take steps to ensure that everyone is aware such behvaiour will not be tolerated.
With staff training and in-venue messages in a variety of forms, Shout-Up! will encourage inappropriate behvaiour to be called out and dealt with swiftly, safely and effectively.
WHEN WOMEN FEEL SAFER, THEY SPEND MORE MONEY.. NO BRAINER, RIGHT?
Women (and to a lesser extent, men) will take a number of steps to deflect or diminish the impact of sexual harassment on a night out. This includes, reducing the amount of time spent, and drinks consumed and avoiding establishments with a ‘bad vibe or atmosphere’ (Fileborn, 2016, p. 113). Nicholls (2017, p. 267).
Shout-Up! supports venues to ensure that they are not known for sexual harassment, which damages reputation as well as revenue and footfall.
